Telescopes: Studying The Skies

The hobby of amateur astronomy has truly been around for centuries, way before the technological development of telescopes. The fascination and appeal of the night sky has always had a uniqueness and closeness to the hearts of humanity. There is probably no other one of life\'s greater mysterious realms of curiosity in existence compared to the stars, moon, planets and galaxies. There are several miraculous thoughts and beliefs that have sprung up from viewings of the nighttime stars over the many centuries of star gazing. These superstitions have notably come from the constellations, reading the stars to predict the future, and the beauty of falling stars bestowing good fortune while making a wish.

The mystical appeal of astronomy continues even now. We live in the day and age of technological advancements and hard scientific proof of knowledge in understanding so much more than ever before of our stars, moon and sun. Even with all of our scientific knowledge, this still does not stop us to continue gazing up with awe and delight. We now know what our stars are made of, and that they are simply gigantic suns that sit billions of miles away. Most all of us are aware of the how the stars are created and that there is no possible way for these stars or constellations to influence our lives or destinies. But there are still so many of us that toss the science all aside, to make a special wish upon every shooting star that we may see.

Amateur astronomy studies is a simple and inexpensive hobby. The only big purchase really needed is a telescope for viewing the night sky with greater clarity. Even the very affordable lower priced modern telescopes includes light filters and built in digital cameras for making it extremely easy to record the details that you want to preserve. Another simple tool that every amateur astronomer needs is a star chart. A good star chart will list all of the known constellations and many of the already discovered celestial bodies, with exception to some of the most distant stars, planets and far away galaxies, that can be seen with a good telescope. Sometimes these star charts are accompanied by books filled with detailed dates along with times of the most star gazing visibility.

The only other important tool needed for amateur astronomers is some form of a log book for keeping track of everything that you discover. It does not matter if it is only a pen and notebook or a computer for keeping your records, as long as you can jot down what you have viewed and each new discovery to refer back to. With these affordable and simple tools, most anyone can begin astronomy studies as a fascinating on going hobby. Astronomy studies is a hobby of endless discoveries that can be shared with others or just enjoyed in the tranquility of your own company.
